Holiday and light, peace and harmony in the family are longed for by the soul of Signor Cupiello. But all around is not like that - a grumpy wife, a naughty and spoiled son, a bothersome brother, a daughter leaving her husband... The play by Italian playwright Eduardo De Filippo comes back to life on the stage of the Maly Theatre after a half-century break. But both then and now all the twists and turns in the life of a simple Neapolitan family find a live response in the heart of the audience.

«Cupiello's house is a house-theatre, a place where a whole range of human emotions are possible, from laughter to tragedy," says Stefano De Luca, the play's director. That's why the genre of the play is very difficult to define, it's all mixed up, just like in life.

The creche, which is crafted by Signor Cupiello is a symbol of Christmas, the holy family, the ideal family. The protagonist desperately tries to make his family the same. But things fall apart little by little, so he finds refuge in his own world.

In our production, Vasiliy Bochkaryov and Evgeniya Glushenko play the lead roles - it's just a director's dream to have such a couple. They bring to the stage all the baggage of their theatrical lives together.»
