Alexander Ivanovich Yuzhin (1857-1927) was a stage name of the Georgian Prince Sumbatov (Sumbatashvili), who dominated the Maly Theatre of Moscow at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was best known for the Romantical parts in the dramas by Schiller and Victor Hugo but also penned a number of plays himself. Yuzhin lived on to become one of the first "People's Artists of the Republic" in 1922.

He was a freemason. Initiated to February 17, 1908 in the masonic lodge "Renaissance" (Grand Orient of France).

SUMBATOV-UZHIN'S DAY

On September 17, according to tradition, the Maly Theatre remembers A.I. Sumbatov-Yuzhin. We asked the people's artists of Russia Valeriy Afanasyev, Vasiliy Bochkaryov and Alexander Ermakov to read a few fragments from Yuzhin's speech to the theatre company delivered in 1909. YUZHIN AND OSTUZHEV: THE HISTORY OF ONE FRIENDSHIP

​Dear friends, On November 26, 2017 an exceptional evening called «"Boldly for the first time I take complete responsibility for his entire life": Alexander Yuzhin and Alexander Ostuzhev» was held in A.I.Sumbatov-Yuzhin's Memorial Apartment. The evening was held by the Chief Funds Curator of the Maly Theatre's museum Nadezhda Telegina. Honored Artist of Russia Alexander Beliy and artist Alexander Driven recited fragments of letters and diaries of Alexander Ostuzhev and AIexander Sumbatov-Yuzhin.
