Igor Petrenko was born on August 23, 1977 in Potsdam (East Germany). In 2000 Igor graduated from the Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theatre School and joined the Maly Theatre’s company. After a while, because of his busy filming schedule, he had to leave the Maly Theatre.

In 2001 Igor Petrenko made his film debut in the film «Pavlov’s Reflex», directed by Ildar Islamgulov. He has earned critical and public acclaim for his acting in the television series «Moscow Windows» (2001) directed by Alexander Arabin. Petrenko later earned acclaim for his work in the hit military drama «The Star» (2002), directed by Nikolay Lebedev. In 2003 for this role he won the Nika Award in the nomination «Discovery of the Year». For his acting skills, the actor was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and art in 2002, awarded by the President of the Russian Federation, and in 2004 he was awarded the «Triumph» Award as the best young actor.

In 2013 Igor Petrenko played one of the world's most famous detectives Sherlock Holmes in the Russian television crime drama series based on the Sherlock Holmes detective stories by Arthur Conan Doyle that was aired in November 2013 on Rossiya 1 TV channel "Russia-1.

At the Maly Theatre - from June 1, 2000 to March 12, 2002, and from December 6, 2017.
