THE DRAGON
Evgeny Schwartz

St. Petersburg State Academic Comedy Theatre named after N.P. Akimov

Nearest shows:

For 400 years, the city has been ruled by a cunning and powerful Dragon. Every year, the Dragon demands a new sacrifice, choosing the most beautiful of the city girls as its bride. But one day a wandering knight Lancelot comes to the city - a tired knight without a chain mail and a sword, with scars from old battles on his face, ready to free the city from the power of a monster. Tyrant defeated in a duel, but his place is in a hurry to take a new "dragon". In the ironic and sad tale of Evgeny Schwartz there are talking cats, invisible hats and flying carpets.

It is based on the fabulous story of the peoples of Southeast Asia about the dragon, which cannot be defeated, because the conqueror himself will turn into a dragon. But the magical entourage does not hide, but only underlines the acute social overtones, reflections on the nature of power and human nature, disfigured by fear, accustomed to lying and not ready to accept freedom. To the "Dragon" N.P. Akimov appealed twice - in 1944 and 1962.

The premiere of the Akimov Comedy Theatre coincides with an important date - the 120th anniversary of the playwright's birth. With her new performance, Tatyana Kazakova develops one of the most important artistic lines of the theatre - a line of high comedy, sharp, multifaceted and aphoristic. This is not a play “on the topic of the day”, but an attempt to reach universal summaries, to show how great the temptation is with power, and how easily the seeds of evil sprout in people's souls.
