The production by Andrey Tsisaruk is one of several performances that the Maly Theatre has prepared for the anniversary of Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky. “At the Jolly Spot” is a play based on real events and personal observations of the author. A half-detective story of a hot spot - a tavern in the Russian backwoods, however, is not devoid of lyrics and a kind of optimism. Without exaggeration and also without idealizing the reality surrounding him, Ostrovsky, with his inherent talent, shows a life in which, there is always a place for love and happiness despite its darkness and hopelessness. “At the Jolly Spot” was one of the most popular productions played very often and loved by the public in the pre-war Maly Theatre due to the participation of the legendary Vera Pashennaya in it. The director of the play Andrey Tsisaruk, carefully keeping up the traditions of the Maly Theater, allows us to plunge into past and, what is common for Ostrovsky plays, to feel the relevance of those events and situations to us.
