THEATRE NAMEDAY, or ACTOR IS NOT THE AUDIENCE'S BUTLER

Dear friends,

In 2017 the Memorial apartment of A.I. Sumbatov-Yuzhin prepared an exhibition dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the great actor and director of the Maly Theatre, Alexander Pavlovich Lenskiy (1847-1908).

OnJune 11 (Tuesday) 2019 at 19:00 in the Memorial apartment of A.I. Sumbatov-Uzhin thematic evening called “Alexander Lenskiy, Alexander Yuzhin and the public: On the issue of applause, benefit performances and anniversaries. "

Alexander Lenskiy was the first to speak out against benefit performances and offerings from the public (flowers, valuable gifts, etc) during the perfomance. Lenskiy argued that “the actor is not the audience’s butler”, and refused his benefit performance for the 25th anniversary of his service in the Maly Theatre.

In December 1895, Alexander Pavlovich Lenskiy published a letter in the Moscow newspaper "News of the Day" about "the destruction of the applause." How did the actors and the audience react to this? How did Alexander Ivanovich Sumbatov-Yuzhin (1857 - 1927) speak on the question of applause during the performance and about the actors' exits to the calls of the public?
